Leonard Cohen - Death of A Lady's Man, Rare 1978 First Edition Hardback
$200
Leonard Cohen's Death of A Lady's Man. Published in 1978 by McCleland and Stewart. True first edition. Overall good condition, dust jacket clipped. Page 94 contains the phrase "Lie down," a key bibliographic marker identifying this rare first printing. In later printings and subsequent editions, this line was corrected to "Lay down." This distinct typo makes these first-state copies particularly sought after by collectors.
Born in Montreal in 1934, Leonard Cohen studied English at McGill and published his first poetry collection, Let Us Compare Mythologies, in 1956. Already established as a writer, he turned seriously to music; his 1968 debut album included “Suzanne,” which Judy Collins had recorded the year before. “Hallelujah” appeared much later, on his 1984 album Various Positions.
Visit while in Montreal: Leonard Cohen's House and Bagel Etc. His former residence is in the heart of the Plateau at 28 rue de Vallières, then head to nearby Bagel Etc. at 4320 boulevard Saint-Laurent, where he was a regular, often sitting at the counter with his usual breakfast of "powerful espresso and more espresso," recalled the cafe's owner. The triplex is a private residence, so enjoy the connection from the sidewalk.
