The Future by Leonard Cohen, cassette published in 1992 by Sony Music Canada. Good condition.

Born in Montreal in 1934, Leonard Cohen studied English at McGill and published his first poetry collection, Let Us Compare Mythologies, in 1956. Already established as a writer, he turned seriously to music; his 1968 debut album included “Suzanne,” which Judy Collins had recorded the year before. “Hallelujah” appeared much later, on his 1984 album Various Positions.

The Future pairs Cohen's dry, spoken-sung delivery with synth-driven arrangements, backing vocals and flashes of country. Across “Democracy,” “Anthem” and “Waiting for the Miracle,” he takes on political disillusionment, faith and hope, Three songs from the album later featured in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers.

Visit while in Montreal: Leonard Cohen's House and Bagel Etc. His former residence is in the heart of the Plateau at 28 rue de Vallières, then head to nearby Bagel Etc. at 4320 boulevard Saint-Laurent, where he was a regular, often sitting at the counter with his usual breakfast of "powerful espresso and more espresso," recalled the cafe's owner. The triplex is a private residence, so enjoy the connection from the sidewalk.
